Epstein received his doctorate from Strasbourg. His work was in number theory, in particular the zeta function. He also worked on the history of mathematics. He lectured in Frankfurt from 1919 to 1935.

In 1938 Epstein escaped being put into a concentration camp (he was Jewish). In August 1938 he received a summons from the Gestapo and fearing torture, he committed suicide by taking poison.
