Dantzig became an assistant to Schouten in 1927. He lectured at Delft but was dismissed when the Germans occupied Holland. He was appointed professor at Amsterdam in 1946.

Dantzig studied differential geometry, electromagnetism and thermodynamics. His most important work was in topological algebra (a term he coined). He studied metrisation of groups, rings and fields.
