Camus studied mathematics with Varignon. He served the Academy of Sciences as an administrator for 40 years and was an active scientist.

Camus went with Maupertuis, Clairaut and Lemonnier to Lapland in 1736 on an expedition to determine the shape of the Earth. He was also involved with cartography helping produce (with Cassini de Thury) the Carte de la France .
