Rouse Ball was a fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge from 1878 to 1905. He was a mathematics lecturer and tutor at the College but he is best known as an historian of mathematics.

Rouse Ball wrote A short history of mathematics (1888) which provided a very readable and popular account of the subject.

Ball was the author of the very popular Mathematical Recreations and Essays first published in 1892 which has run to fourteen editions (the last four being revised by H S M Coxeter).
